Meningitis ACWY Travel Vaccine

Protects against four strains of bacterial meningitis and is a mandatory entry requirement for Hajj and Umrah pilgrims, as well as being recommended for travel to parts of the 'meningitis belt' of sub-Saharan Africa.

Timing

At least 2-3 weeks before travel, and well ahead of any Hajj or Umrah visa application since proof of vaccination is required.

Typical course

A single injection giving protection for around 3-5 years.

Often relevant for

  • Saudi Arabia (Hajj/Umrah)
  • sub-Saharan Africa meningitis belt

Saudi Arabian authorities require an ACWY certificate dated within the last 3 years (and issued at least 10 days before arrival) as a condition of entry for pilgrims, so this is usually one of the first jabs booked once Hajj or Umrah travel is confirmed.

Outside pilgrimage travel, ACWY is also considered for travellers spending extended time in the African meningitis belt, especially during the dry season when transmission risk rises, or for anyone in close-contact settings such as dormitories.

Travellers should keep their vaccination certificate with their passport, since border staff may ask to see it directly.
