Hepatitis B Travel Vaccine

Protects against a blood-borne and sexually transmitted liver infection, often recommended for longer trips, healthcare work abroad, or travel where medical or dental treatment might be needed.

Timing

Ideally started well in advance, as the standard course runs over several months (an accelerated schedule is available if time is short).

Typical course

3 doses over several months on the standard schedule, or a faster accelerated course of 3 doses over 3 weeks plus a booster.

Often relevant for

  • longer stays in Asia, Africa, Eastern Europe and South America
  • healthcare or aid work abroad

Hepatitis B spreads through blood and bodily fluids, so it is particularly relevant for travellers planning medical or dental treatment overseas, longer stays, or work placements such as healthcare, aid or sports where exposure is more likely.

Because the standard schedule takes months to complete, anyone considering this vaccine should raise it as early as possible when planning a trip.

It is sometimes given as part of a combined hepatitis A and B vaccine where protection against both is wanted.
